Cooling Shelters opened in Portland amid heat wave
Portland is experiencing another heatwave that is expected to last through the weekend. Take precaution and be on the lookout for heat related illnesses.
On Tuesday Governor Kate Brown issued a state of emergency for most of Oregon due to the higher temperatures. Locally, the city and county announced heat emergency declarations on Sunday warning of dangerously high temperatures that could break triple digits multiple days this week.
5 cooling shelters were opened yesterday for people needing to get out of the heat. Four are open 24 hours a day, while the Old Town cooling shelter is open daily.
Those shelters are:
Charles Jordan Community Center: 9009 N. Foss Ave., Portland
East Portland Community Center: 740 S.E. 106th Ave., Portland
Portland Building: 1120 S.W. 5th Ave., Portland
Sunrise Center: 18901 E. Burnside, Portland
Old Town (10AM-100PM): 435 N.W. Glisan St., Portland
To help provide areas of comfort, two libraries are extending their open hours until 9 PM through Saturday:
Gresham: 385 N.W. Miller Ave., Gresham
Holgate: 7905 S.E. Holgate Blvd., Portland
During this time, TriMet is offering free rides to people going to a cooling place. TriMet asks riders to let their driver know they are headed to a cooling place.
